Check the bottle against the place
Reef-safe is not one packing rule. Hawaii, Palau, and the U.S. Virgin Islands use different ingredient screens, so a bottle that passes one destination can fail the next.
DESTINATION 01
Hawaii
The statewide rule bans oxybenzone and octinoxate from sale. Maui and the Big Island use mineral-only rules.
If Maui or the Big Island is on the itinerary, pack a bottle with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both as its only UV filters.
DESTINATION 02
Palau
Palau bans ten ingredients. A zinc lotion can still fail because the list includes phenoxyethanol and four parabens.
Check the UV filters and the inactive ingredients. Sun Bum Mineral fails Palau, while Thrive BodyShield 50 passes.
DESTINATION 03
U.S. Virgin Islands
The USVI list names oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene.
Read the actives for those three names. Sun Bum Original SPF 30 fails on octocrylene; Native Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 passes.
Start with the strictest stop
A multi-stop trip needs one bottle that passes every place on the itinerary. Palau checks ingredients that the USVI rule does not, and Maui rejects chemical filters that can pass both statewide Hawaii and the USVI.
