Check three names before packing sunscreen for the USVI

U.S. Virgin Islands sunscreen rules name oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene. A bottle fails if any one appears in Active ingredients. Mineral filters are not required under the USVI rule.

READ THE ACTIVES

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Octocrylene

If none of those names appears, the bottle passes this ingredient screen. This says nothing about Maui or Palau, which use different rules.

Eight bottles, split by the USVI rule

Every failing bottle below contains octocrylene. None of the passing bottles contains a USVI-listed UV filter. Follow the Drug Facts source if your bottle name or percentages do not match.

A common bottle mix-up

Sun Bum Original SPF 30 has no oxybenzone or octinoxate, so it passes Hawaii Act 104. It still lists octocrylene at 10%, which makes that lotion a USVI fail. An Act 104 badge does not answer the USVI question.

Native Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 is zinc oxide 17% as the only UV active, so it passes the USVI ingredient screen. Native does not claim water resistance for that lotion. For time in the water, the catalog gives Thrive BodyShield 50 an 80-minute claim and a USVI pass.

USVI Act 8604 (2020). Confirm on current USVI code before travel

Confirm the current USVI code before travel. Our catalog links to the government homepage rather than a copy of the act, so that caveat stays with the rule.
